There’s nothing so rare in the cancer world as a clear answer. It’s often as overwhelming as the question itself. So here’s what we know: the right messenger makes all the difference if you want to be heard and understood. Which is why we made a case for Karmanos by giving it a voice: through the people and communities touched by cancer.

Reframing The Cancer Experience
Spending time at Karmanos changes you. You meet remarkable patients and doctors that push the boundaries of what it means to persevere. You learn about staff whose job is to uncomplicate the complicated. You hear about treatments and technologies that have grown from science fiction to fact. This is the cancer experience that needs to be shared.
Enter Kim, Angie, Sophia, Terrell, Jaimie and Doctor V. who each brought their own unique perspectives on care, treatment and personal empowerment through a second opinion.
We spent our time with each, using simple devices and metaphors to help them tell their story. We asked the questions that a patient or caregiver might ask if they had the chance. We sat back and listened while they opened up.
And from their words, we built answers. Useful answers. On universal topics like the need for screenings and second opinions. On specific explanations of technology like theranostics and proton therapy. We demystified the process with a patient navigator. And we worked to normalize the powerful emotions that arise.
We made sure people heard. With dozens of versions built for broadcast across the state. Highly specific posts for social and video that share important moments and messages. Content for OOH and multiple radio spots. We even built out long form videos of each story for those quiet moments when you might need them the most.
Our job was to ensure that if you were seeking answers, you could take a second to hear what you needed. And then, take a second opinion from Karmanos.

Community Defined
We live in a connected world where community is no longer defined by simple geography. And while our campaign was designed to reach people where they live online, it was also designed to reach them where they live in the real world. Karmanos is intimately connected to the places they serve, so we matched real venues to the stories we wanted to share.
